1491

Inhabitants of the Americas, in particular those who are the descendants of immigrants ought to have a clear understanding of what these lands were like before 1492. It is now quite clear that the narrative we absorbed as children on the history of the Americas was grossly distorted. Caribbean textbooks need to reflect the new research findings. No more must we read of the peaceful Arawaks and the warlike, cannibalistic Caribs; descriptions which have no basis in history. To describe the book 1491 as an eye-opener would be an understatement. A follow-up, 1493, will soon be out in paperback. A must-read.
