Saints Girls in Basketball

St. Stanislaus College Postal Stamp

Government of Guyana issued three sets of postal stamps to mark 150 years of Jesuit service in Guyana. As it is engraved on the stamp Jesuits arrived in Guyana in the year 1857. One of their significant services to the nation was St. Stanislaus College. To mark this one of three postal stamp was dedicated to St. Stanislaus College. I wonder whether students are aware of this postal stamp since electronic mail has taken over this old form of communication.

Postal Stamp to mark Centenary of the College, from 1907 - 2007

This postal stamp marks a zealous Jesuit missionary Fr Cuthbert Cary Elwes SJ. whose work with Amerindians is commendable.

This stamp marks the Sacred Heart Church in Guyana, a largest wooden Church which was burnt down 2004 by unpredicted fire.

Indoor Hockey

The St. Stanislaus Under-13 girls team recently took part in an Indoor Hockey competition and acquitted themselves very well.

Lions Club makes donation to St Stanislaus College

In 2011, we received a set of Recycle Bins and Clocks from the Georgetown Stabroek Lions' Club on the occasion of World Service Day. These gifts made us much more conscious of the need to recycle in the interests of saving energy and that of  not wasting time. We take this opportunity to thank the Lions for their generous gifts.

Basketball Champions

Saints were winners in Basketball in 2011. We hope that in the future we can have continued success and make it a fine tradition. Some of the (much) older folks will remember the 60s when players like Carl Sylvester,Tony Henson, John Lewis, Chris Fernandes, Geoffrey Murray, Elton Amo and Mike Da Costa were in their heyday. Let's keep the fires burning, folks.

A Remarkable History of the College

Fr. Clement Barraud S.J. (1880-1900)

IN October 1880 - the care of the Grammar School (St. Stanislaus College was known at its inception) was entrusted to one who was to devote his energies to it for the next '20 years, Fr. Clement Barraud, S.J. When he took over., he tells us, there were fifteen boys and an Assistant Master whose salary was double what the school brought in - so financial difficulties are nothing new in the history of the College. It was during this time Fr. Barraud composed the hymn of St. Stanislaus and the discussion on the statue of St. Stanislaus to be installed was underway.

Congrats to Kevin Mohan who won the Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS) HIV/AIDS Programme Inter-School Impromptu Speaking Competition , in observance of World AIDS Day 2010. Each of the twelve (12) participants had to make a presentation on a different topic under the global theme ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. GBA Visits St. Stanislaus College

President of the Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) and national coach, Gokarn Ramdhani, recently visited the St. Stanislaus College in Georgetown, and held brief discussions on the game with students there. The interested students were given valuable tips on the game. The visit by the GBA head was part of the association’s mandate to ensure that the game, which was introduced at specific schools throughout the country two years ago, is being played at those institutions.

Football and Hockey

Saints is participating in the Scotia Bank-Pepsi Schools Football Tournament which opened recently at the GFC ground.  Twelve schools are participating in both male and female categories.  Saints Coach Uzzi Yisrael was one of the14 teachers and coaches who successfully completed a two-day Football Coaches Course conducted by instructors Rajesh Latchoo of Trinidad and Tobago and Stan Harmon of the United States of America at the Ministry of Education Sports Complex on Carifesta Avenue.  We recently received donated sports equipment through the Scotia Bank/Pepsi Schools Football Academy

Past and present students of Saints have formed a hockey team.  Having benefitted from coaching by the Hikers Hockey Club for a number of years, they now feel they have the numbers and capacity to venture out on their own and form their own independent club
Those elected were: President- Joel Hunte, Vice President- Marcia Persaud, Treasurer- Rushelle Matthias, Secretary- Yonnick Peters and Assistant Secretary/Treasurer- Hilton Chester.
Saints are expected to rest much of their hopes squarely on Joel Hunt and Leroy Jack who are both a part of the current national Under-21 squad.

The first match saw the newly formed Saints Club take on the Airbenders, a side made up primarily of the women’s national squad.  The All Greys take the field for the first time against Saints on Saturday March 17
